Psychic House Detectives in Essex
Every month, we challenge two mystics to reveal the secrets of our mystery residents just by nosing around their home. So who lives in this well-tended Essex semi?
THE CHALLENGE
This month’s detectives, Chris and Marko, were taken to a quiet, residential street in Gant’s Hill, near Ilford, Essex. They each had an hour to walk around the four-bedroom house to see what they could sense from the energy imprinted in the building and possessions of its owner, which would tell them about the people who live there. The residents were banished for the afternoon and all personal photographs, which may have given clues to their identity, were concealed. Our reporter, Emily Anderson, noted their findings.
THE SPACE CLEARER
Chris Colgan left his internet job after a life-changing trip to Arizona four years ago. Today, he’s a space clearer and reiki healer. He uses his intuition to sense and banish negative energy from homes and businesses.
Chris’s technique is to walk around the room, holding one hand on his stomach to enhance the energy he feels in the space. His other hand picks up vibrational imprints about the people who live there.
THE CLAIRVOYANT
Mark Dean, better known as Marko, has had second sight from an early age. He trained in astrology, rebirthing, neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and herbalism, and is writing a book on the healing power of rudrakshas, Indian beads that bring luck and healing to the wearer. Marko receives messages from the spirit world about what’s happened in a building. He also uses his knowledge of vaastu, the Indian version of feng shui.
THE HOUSEHOLDER
Honey Kalaria is Bollywood’s leading dance choreographer and has recently starred in her first film. She’s danced for Tony Blair and the Queen, and has appeared at Wembley Arena and Birmingham NEC. She also runs her own performing arts academy. Honey bought the spacious house just over a year ago for herself and her mum, dad and younger brother. All four of them are very spiritual and spend time meditating.
CHRIS SAYS
‘As soon as I stepped into the porch, I sense the people who live here present two different faces to the world. There’s a OMR transition between their public’ persona and their homely selves.
‘I’m sensing a lot of pain in my left side, which is linked to feminine energy and indicates a slightly less powerful woman. I’m not picking up quite as much male energy, so any men living here take a back seat with the running of the house. ‘They’re obviously very devout people, judging by the statues everywhere.
‘I’ve never seen anything so exquisite as the shrine full of statues in the dining room. A woman’s emotional pain is associated with it. She uses repetition in her prayers to improve karma.
‘I sense a woman has to do what are traditionally a man’s duties
‘There is more time spent in the kitchen than anywhere else in the house. This family do their own thing most of the time. ‘In the upstairs hall, I feel heavy and get a strong resistance to going into the rooms. It feels as though this family would rather not go to bed, but stay up late in the kitchen and enjoy a good chat.
‘I can feel someone’s irritation with what’s behind the doors in the main bedroom. Whatever’s in there winds somebody up! ‘I pick up a male presence in the first single bedroom. This individual is a deep thinker.
‘Next to a spare room/study is the second double room. In this room I feel like flinging myself on the bed exhausted, so that’s probably what a person who sleeps here does. The man here is a od zer thinker, but the woman sometimes finds him a bit of a pain in the neck!’
MARKO SAYS
‘Standing outside, I sense this house has massive positive energy. Above the porchennoo hangs a tantric herb, which keeps out any evil spirits. ‘Seeing Lord Shiva oppositei the door, as soon as I came in, told me this house is blessed by Shiva, the highest deity in Hinduism.
Lai nouullog ‘At the foot of the stairs near the front door is a statue of Ganesh, remover of obstacles, which has helped to bring much prosperity to this home. 0 2RAW antart This house has been benghin designed according to perfect vaastu. The energy is clean and pure. This place is infused with holy chants and ceremonies.
‘The owners are extremely spiritual people and know all about astrology. They are split between the UK and India. There is also science and medicine in the family. ‘The house seems to have a predominantly female energy, but there are men around. I sense a daughter who’s spiritual, who knows about chakras and is a devotee of a special guru. She touches her guru’s wooden lotus feet [a type of sandal] to connect to him. The daughter is not married, but she’s gearing up to it. She’s always studying. This woman has every chance of becoming internationally famous in the next 20 years.
‘In what must be the son’s bedroom, I sense discipline. This house is created with devotion and spiritual principles in mind. There’s no pollution in it at all. I’ve never experienced such incredible energy in a house in England. ‘There’s enlightenment here, too. As I walked towards this house, I started to feel extremely peaceful and I now realise that this feeling was coming from here. This house brings an incredible sense of peace to the area.
WHAT THEY GOT RIGHT
CHRIS
The people who live here present two very different faces to the world.
‘That’s true of me. Mum says I’m her daughter and her son! There’s a female, sensuous side to me, but I’m also work-driven and practical.’
The men in this household take a back seat and let the women run things.
‘Myself and my mum are the stronger personalities. My brother’s always out and Dad’s a humble, easy-going character.’
The exquisite shrine has a woman’s emotional pain attached to it.
‘It’s my mum’s shrine. She’s had it for years and we all pray in front of it. The pain could be attached to my sister who we lost in a car crash in the late 1980s and all miss terribly.
A woman is taking responsibility for what are traditionally a man’s duties.
‘Spot on. I can be a ruthless businesswoman and I’m the main breadwinner. My parents are retired and it’s my turn to care for them now.’
The individuals in this family do their own thing most of the time.
‘Definitely. When there are any problems everyone is always there, but otherwise we give each other space.’
They’d rather not go to bed, but stay up late in the kitchen, talking.
‘We’re always in the kitchen, chatting and eating! We go to bed as late as 2am. Our bedrooms are only for sleeping.”
Someone gets irritated by what’s behind the doors in the main bedroom.
‘That’s hilarious! My brother is always saying I have too much stuff in my room. I’ve got 40 pairs of shoes, 20 clutch bags, loads of wigs, make-up and jewellery behind those doors!
A man in the house is quiet and thinks a lot.
My brother doesn’t ever talk about his emotions and is much more of a thinker, always wondering what he wants in life.’
Someone who sleeps in the second double bedroom falls on the bed with exhaustion. ‘
‘That’s 100 per cent right. Mum works like crazy all day around the house. She doesn’t stop until her head hits the pillow.’
MARKO
This house is blessed.
‘Many people have said there’s lots of positive energy here. And when I moved in, I asked my guru to bless it for me.’
There’s a lot of prosperity in this home.
‘Since we’ve lived here, big projects, like my Bollywood Workout video, which Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow use, have done very well.’
Many ceremonies have been conducted here and the house is designed according to perfect vaastu.
‘When we moved in, we performed lots of ceremonies to bless the house. I’ve also read books on feng shui, which is similar to vaastu.
The owners are extremely spiritual, and also know a lot about astrology.
‘Mum has said prayers every Friday for 25 years, Dad meditates with me and we follow the Hindu religion. Astrology is Dad’s hobby.’
Medicine is in the family, which is split between the UK and India.
‘We have a surgeon and doctors in the family. And we are split between here and India.’
The daughter is constantly studying and is a devotee of a special guru.
‘Absolutely. I’m always taking courses and I’m a bookaholic! I met my guru five years ago, and immediately felt a connection with him. Everything he said about karma made sense.’
And while she isn’t married yet, she is gearing up to it.
‘How funny! Most Asian women my age are married, but I’m still single, because I’ve focused on my career. I’m currently putting off guys as the time still isn’t right.’
The son is very disciplined and prefers minimalism.
‘Correct. He’s studying Siddha yoga, which takes a lot of discipline. And he likes as few possessions as possible around him.’
This house has reached an incredible state of peace and enlightenment. ‘I started meditating five years ago and found it very powerful. My guru suggested I asked my friends to join me in a meditation when we moved into this house, and 40 people came. I now hold weekly meditation groups.’
VERDICT
‘Wow! Chris and Marko were spot on about me and my family. I hid everything to do with my dancing to see if they could pick up on this big part of my life. Chris sensed that I have different faces, which ties in with the performing arts, and Marko could tell I was successful and had international appeal. The calm, positive energy from regular meditating is so powerful, they sensed that more than anything else. But, then, I don’t dance at home, I meditate here. ‘It’s lovely to hear Marko has never been to a place with such pure energy and that our house brings peace to the area with its meditative atmosphere. I’m also very excited by the prediction that I’ll be internationally famous within 20 years. This ties in with what plenty of palm readers and astrologers have also told me. So watch this space!’

Home Truths
So, you sometimes clear out your underwear drawer and chuck out the odd pair of laddered tights, but have you ever felt like getting rid of the emotional debris in your life? Pave the way for a fresher, brighter future by binning all the old hang-ups that hold you back, using ancient space-clearing rituals to cleanse your heart and home.
Most of us probably have old papers and mementoes stashed away, along with packets of holiday snaps and clothes we haven’t worn for months, too. But what you probably don’t realise is that, even though they may be out of sight, tucked under the bed or at the back of a wardrobe, your unwanted possessions can have a negative effect on you, draining your energy and sapping your lust for life. Here, reader Monya Murch, 34, a yoga teacher from Blackheath, south-east London, tells how she brought in an expert space clearer with dramatic results.
‘About three years ago, I moved into a ground-floor studio apartment with my husband. But the place felt more like a cottage because it was behind an old Georgian house in a leafy part of London.
‘Although I liked my new home, I felt a bit stuck. Once I set foot inside, it always seemed like an effort to get out again. I felt lethargic, like an old lady who just wanted to sit around and sleep all the time.
‘I knew that before we moved into the flat, a 98-year-old woman lived there for many years before she moved into a nursing home.
‘Then, in September 2003, a friend told me ail about a space clearer called Chris Colgan. By this time, my marriage had broken clown. My husband and I had grown apart and we’d decided to get a divorce. I was ready for a real clear-out.
‘When he came to look at my studio, Chris explained how bricks and mortar could suck in energies, and that the energy imprints of previous owners could be left behind. “Maybe l’d been picking up the energy imprint of the old lady?” I questioned.
‘Chris encouraged me to go round the fiat and see how different objects made me feel. After my husband moved out, I knew I had to make the space my own, with my own things, but there was one object I really wanted to hang on to, a grandfather clock. It had belonged to my husband’s grandfather, but I loved it and wanted to keep it.
‘When I thought about it, I realised it wasn’t just a nice piece of furniture; the reason I liked it so much was because it was familiar. To an extent, I feared making changes in case what replaced the old turned out to be awful. That was the hardest bit of the process for me – letting go.
‘But I decided to go for it and I cleared out everything I didn’t like or didn’t feel right about, including the dock. Chris and I went round the house ceremonially ringing bells and wafting burning herbs (a process called smudging). The atmosphere changed instantly. It was lighter and more empowering.
‘I now make spiritual spring cleaning an annual event. It gets easier each time because there’s less stuff to sort through. And you can do it in a more detached way. That said, I recently cleared out a cupboard and found a letter from my ex-husband that l’d forgotten about. He’d written it nine years ago, when we first met, and it was gorgeous. I confess the letter is still here. I know change is good, but sometimes you have to indulge yourself!
‘I would recommend anyone to try peeling back the spiritual layers of their life. You need to create space in your everyday world before you can make space in your mind, and that’s the power of it. Five months after I had my home cleared, I met a new man, who is now my boyfriend. So, it just shows that removing the old makes way for the new:’
Clearing a space We all want the best out of life, whether it’s a happy family or a vibrant loving relationship, it’s just that most of us don’t know how to get it. Space clearing is a hands-on technique we can apply to where we live or work because it’s based on the idea that every item we own holds energy, whether it’s a piece of furniture, an ornament or the building itself.
Chris uses his skills to help people rid their homes and offices of negative energy, improve relationships and even attract house-buyers. If you are able to get the energy levels right at home it will have a knock-on effect on every aspect of your life. Since man first lived in caves, mud huts and teepees, we have blessed our homes in one way or another. Today this tradition continues in many religions around the world. Catholics call in priests to bless their homes, and Jewish people often invite a rabbi to tack small prayer scrolls on to door frames, called mezuzah, for protection.
During Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, homes are thoroughly cleaned and window opened to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Candies and lamps are lit as a greeting to Lakshmi, while gilts are exchanged and festive meals prepared.
Space clearing is based on the principle of paying respect to your home in order to attract positive energy and people into your life. It draws on two main ancient philosophies: firstly, the Native American tradition of burning herbs and holding ceremonies to clear and bless objects, spaces and people, and secondly, feng shui, which evolved in the Far East many centuries ago, and is concerned with boosting positive magnetic and vibrational energies by taking into account the direction that buildings face and the positioning of objects within them. Space clearing is mostly concerned with the energetic imprint left in spaces and on objects and the effect that these have on the people who live and work there. Unlike feng shui, where specific ‘cures’ are brought in or applied, space clearing usually involves the removal of items that aren’t beneficial to their owner’s well-being. Around 75 to 80 per cent of the time in a space clearing session is spent ‘reading’ the energy by listening to what your instincts tell you about an object. If a piece of furniture or ornament gives off negative vibes then it’s time for you to discuss the day-to-day implications this could be having on your life and happiness.
The householder then has to set strong and clear intentions of what they want to invite into their home or workplace. Few of us bother to give our new house or office much thought, beyond what piece of furniture will fit where, who has which bedroom and the colours we plan to daub on the walls. It is an incredibly powerful and empowering process to decide on your future hopes and aspirations and then ceremoniously fill your home with them.

2. DIY space clearing
Space clearing means opening your intuition to sense how each object makes you feel. Just stand in front of it, close your eyes and wait to see what your gut instinct tells you. You may find it helpful to hold your hand a few inches above the object and trace its shape. Take a mental walk through your home to identify what’s holding you back. Sit quietly, close your eyes and listen to relaxing music. Visualise walking up to your front door holding your keys. What do you see and feel? Is it a sanctuary or a prison? Imagine walking into the hall and into each room in turn. This will give you an insight into how your home and possessions make you feel. Follow this up by physically walking around your home and standing in each doorway with your eyes closed for a few moments to see what emotions arise. Here’s what to look out for:
Old furniture
Most of us have been given or bought furniture that once belonged to someone else. One couple was having trouble conceiving a baby and it turned out the husband had bought the double bed with his ex. His new wife hated it. Once they got rid of the bed, it removed the energy block causing the fertility problems. Another woman was on the verge of breaking up with her boyfriend. Chris found that an antique table she’d been left in a will held an imprint of her parents’ volatile relationship, adding to her current relationship problems. You can ease the effect by moving the furniture into another room – but it’s better to give it away or sell it as soon as you can afford to.
Unwanted gifts
In-laws can be the culprits here, giving ugly pictures or ornaments that stay on display or only come out of the cupboard when they visit. These may make adults feel like kids again. Partners can spark resentment by bringing home a painting or piece of furniture their lover dislikes, but feels obliged to keep. Try the American practice of ‘re-gifting’ where you pass on unwanted gifts without feeling guilty.
Holiday mementoes
These objects can be empowering if they are connected to good memories, but maybe your trip was marred by rows or unhappiness. Photographs have a similar role. Get rid of those with a thumb over the lens, and make sure the ones you hold on to remind you of happy times.
Self-Image
First stop is clothes. One ME sufferer still kept her gym kit in a bedside table. She admitted it was a constant reminder of what she couldn’t do. Get rid of clothes that no longer fit or you haven’t worn for a season. Ensure mirrors are the right height and don’t cut off the top of your head, which can be disempowering.
Symbolism
Are you single and surrounded by solitary figurines? The same can be said of only having one wine glass or a painting of a deserted landscape. Pairing candles and having images of happy groups of people around you can readjust the vibe.
Toxic friends
What energy are you inviting into your home? We all have different friends for different aspects of our lives. But you may feel you’re giving more than you’re receiving. Do you feel better or worse for seeing them? Set clear boundaries – be upfront about how long they can stay and remind them you need to have your say!
3. Make a fresh start
Once you know what’s clogging up your life, sweep it away. Ask friends in photographs whether they’d like to have them. If they’re of an ex-boyfriend or toxic friend, it can be liberating to burn them in a small bonfire outside. Thank them for the good times as you watch the pictures go up in smoke! Why not sell unwanted presents or ornaments on eBay, and use the money for something positive, like a holiday or meal out. Charity shops and recycling bins will take care of the rest.
OK, so you’ve cleared away the negative energy- but now you need to replace it with something positive.
• Dedicate a purpose for each room
Stand in the doorway of each room and be aware of what you’d like to experience there. Your bedroom sets you up for the day, so make sure it’s not cluttered with a stack of books, work files or a TV. Think how good you’d feel waking up to a tidy room and an empowering picture. Kitchens are the heart of the home, so ensure that cupboards aren’t full of tatty out-of-date packets and worktops are tidy. A bathroom can be a revitalising sanctuary, so fill it with oils and candles. Is your lounge a family room or somewhere to relax with friends? The colour red lends itself to sociable activities, whereas turquoise and green denote a more tranquil space.
• Seal your positive intentions
When you’ve decided on a purpose for each room, reaffirm this with a simple ceremony. Walk in a clockwise direction around each space, shaking a rattle or banging a makeshift drum, to direct your thoughts and wishes into the walls. Placing fresh flowers on a table or putting a candle by the front door will keep positive energies topped up.

How to Heal Your Home
‘Our home is stressing us out’ says Paula Moore. She is a chiropractor, and her partner Laurie Tomlinson, 34, is a doctor. They live in Southwick, West Sussex.
THE PROBLEM
‘We’ve lived here for two years and have never felt it’s a relaxing environment,” says Paula. ‘My clinic is on the ground floor, so I can never switch off at the end of the day. Laurie finds it hard to unwind here, too. Since we moved in, we’ve both slept really badly and we’re always getting colds and flu. Our relationship has also been affected. We want to make the flat an oasis where we can escape our hectic lives and become closer.’
THE SOLUTION
Chris Colgan is an expert in space clearing. ‘I work with the energy in people’s homes and workplaces, helping to identify the things holding them back. Buildings store an energetic imprint of past events and connections we’ve made with people in our lives,’ he says.
CHRIS SAYS: I started by ‘reading’ the and energy of Paula and Laurie’s flat. I do this by standing in the space instinctively getting a sense of what’s going on. I also pass my hands over the space to sense blockages, in the same way as when you heal someone’s body.
I detected the property had a long history of being a space that’s both worked and lived in. The girls confirmed it had once been a blacksmith’s forge and a fire station. This pattern has continued and Paula now has a clinic here, too. The space clearing will help them start afresh.
The design of the flat is jumbled and it’s cluttered in places, so it’s good they’re going to redesign it. As you walk upstairs, the kitchen is in front of you, but a partitioned ‘box’ housing the bedroom and bathroom has been constructed next to it, blocking the kitchen from view of the main living area. It’s only connected by a narrow comidor alongside the bedroom.
This hallway space had shoe racks in it, which blocked the flow energy between the two spaces, rather like a blocked artery. This drains energy, making you feel lethargic, and cuts creativity and inspiration. A space like this must be left clutter-free.
The bedroom and bathroom area is basically a room within a room with space on top. The area below the main ceiling was being used as storage, accessed via a ladder. Having things packed into space overhead and inside lofts can limit your potential. In space clearing, the space above your head represents your future. This is why we refer to ‘glass ceilings’ and ‘going up the career ladder’. Having physical blockages above your head can slow your progress in life.
In the bedroom, there was an unusual imbalanced energy. I can usually tell who sleeps on the left or right of the bed, but I couldn’t do that here. This is because Paula and Laurie regularly switch sides, which is quite rare. Generally, the man or, in a same-sex relationship, the person with the most male energy, will sleep nearest to the door. It’s an inbuilt and subconscious tendency linked to the protective instinct.
However, if a man sleeps away from the door it can mean he’s a gentle, creative type and maybe the woman has a stronger male energy. Paula and Laurie should stick to one spot as they’re constantly merging their energies and their identities, and in any relationship it’s much better to distinguish your identities.
The bed wasn’t in the centre of the room, so one of them always had to squeeze around the edge of the bed in the comer. It’s a real block in a relationship as it’s literally relegating one person to a comer, blocking them in. So we made more room on that side of the bed.
They also both shared the same clothes and the same closet, which contributes to the merging of their energies and identities.
The bedroom had lots of books, which isn’t conducive to intimacy because books draw them into ‘think mode’. I advised them to move the books out to create a more intimate environment. Another problem is the fact that the kitchen, which has a harsh, industrial style, feels disconnected from the rest of the living space because of the flat’s layout. They should eventually make the flat more open-plan, so they’re not separated while one of them is cooking. They should get rid of the industrial look and harmonise their cooking area with the rest of the home.
Finally, to perform the space clearing I used a bowl containing a tea light, incense, flowers and some water that had been blessed in my family home in Ireland. Paula and I also called upon help from the guardian spirit of the home. Sound can break up energy, so we clapped, used a space clearing bell and a Tibetan singing bowl, which ‘sings’ when it is struck to produce a bell-like sound. Then I bumed purifying sage and wafted it around the space.
Later, Paula and Laurie got together to talk about their intentions and desires for the future and how they want their home to be. Then they gently sprinkled blessed water around. I suggested that Paula state her intentions as affirmations every day at the top of the stairs to bring health back into their living space. Also, she should leave all her work behind when she’s in her living space.
THE VERDICT
PAULA SAYS: Chris changed our lives immediately. We started in the bedroom and took out the books and some of the fumiture, so it wasn’t cluttered any more. We also made plenty of room around the bed, and that night we made love again for the first time in a while. It seemed like the new, calmer environment brought us closer together. We’ve begun sleeping well, too.
We hadn’t realised how much the bedroom was affecting our relationship. Instead of it being an oasis, it was more like a stopping point between bouts of work. We had poor communication between us and we weren’t feeling close. Now it feels calm and intimate, and that’s showing in our relationship.
We’ve stopped sharing clothes and we each have a designated side of the bed that we sleep on. It has certainly helped in establishing our own identities in the relationship. Clearing out all the clutter in the flat has made it seem less hectic, and now we’re finding it so much easier to relax here. Until I spoke to Chris, I hadn’t realised how unhappy we both were with the kitchen. We hardly used it and instead ate out a lot. It just hasn’t seemed a very inviting space to spend time in and I never really understood why. Now we’ve completely changed the original architect’s plan and we’re going to integrate the kitchen with the rest of the flat’s look, making the whole place more open-plan. We’ll make sure it’s big enough to include a dining table, so it’s the hub of the home rather than just an afterthought.
Interestingly, Chris found no problems in the living room, which is where we had been spending all our time because that’s where we felt most comfortable in the flat. We’re now using all the rooms. It really feels like Chris managed to move a lot of stuck energy from the rest of the flat. Laurie and I wanted to improve our physical wellbeing and the health of our relationship, and I’m pleased to say we’ve managed to achieve all those things. Now we’re incorporating Chris’s suggestions on the redevelopment plans and looking forward to a great future.
