Psychic House Detectives in Essex
Every month, we challenge two mystics to reveal the secrets of our mystery residents just by nosing around their home. So who lives in this well-tended Essex semi?
THE CHALLENGE
This month’s detectives, Chris and Marko, were taken to a quiet, residential street in Gant’s Hill, near Ilford, Essex. They each had an hour to walk around the four-bedroom house to see what they could sense from the energy imprinted in the building and possessions of its owner, which would tell them about the people who live there. The residents were banished for the afternoon and all personal photographs, which may have given clues to their identity, were concealed. Our reporter, Emily Anderson, noted their findings.
THE SPACE CLEARER
Chris Colgan left his internet job after a life-changing trip to Arizona four years ago. Today, he’s a space clearer and reiki healer. He uses his intuition to sense and banish negative energy from homes and businesses.
Chris’s technique is to walk around the room, holding one hand on his stomach to enhance the energy he feels in the space. His other hand picks up vibrational imprints about the people who live there.
THE CLAIRVOYANT
Mark Dean, better known as Marko, has had second sight from an early age. He trained in astrology, rebirthing, neurolinguistic programming (NLP) and herbalism, and is writing a book on the healing power of rudrakshas, Indian beads that bring luck and healing to the wearer. Marko receives messages from the spirit world about what’s happened in a building. He also uses his knowledge of vaastu, the Indian version of feng shui.
THE HOUSEHOLDER
Honey Kalaria is Bollywood’s leading dance choreographer and has recently starred in her first film. She’s danced for Tony Blair and the Queen, and has appeared at Wembley Arena and Birmingham NEC. She also runs her own performing arts academy. Honey bought the spacious house just over a year ago for herself and her mum, dad and younger brother. All four of them are very spiritual and spend time meditating.
CHRIS SAYS
‘As soon as I stepped into the porch, I sense the people who live here present two different faces to the world. There’s a OMR transition between their public’ persona and their homely selves.
‘I’m sensing a lot of pain in my left side, which is linked to feminine energy and indicates a slightly less powerful woman. I’m not picking up quite as much male energy, so any men living here take a back seat with the running of the house. ‘They’re obviously very devout people, judging by the statues everywhere.
‘I’ve never seen anything so exquisite as the shrine full of statues in the dining room. A woman’s emotional pain is associated with it. She uses repetition in her prayers to improve karma.
‘I sense a woman has to do what are traditionally a man’s duties
‘There is more time spent in the kitchen than anywhere else in the house. This family do their own thing most of the time. ‘In the upstairs hall, I feel heavy and get a strong resistance to going into the rooms. It feels as though this family would rather not go to bed, but stay up late in the kitchen and enjoy a good chat.
‘I can feel someone’s irritation with what’s behind the doors in the main bedroom. Whatever’s in there winds somebody up! ‘I pick up a male presence in the first single bedroom. This individual is a deep thinker.
‘Next to a spare room/study is the second double room. In this room I feel like flinging myself on the bed exhausted, so that’s probably what a person who sleeps here does. The man here is a od zer thinker, but the woman sometimes finds him a bit of a pain in the neck!’
MARKO SAYS
‘Standing outside, I sense this house has massive positive energy. Above the porchennoo hangs a tantric herb, which keeps out any evil spirits. ‘Seeing Lord Shiva oppositei the door, as soon as I came in, told me this house is blessed by Shiva, the highest deity in Hinduism.

The energy is clean and pure. This place is infused with holy chants and ceremonies.
‘The owners are extremely spiritual people and know all about astrology. They are split between the UK and India. There is also science and medicine in the family. ‘The house seems to have a predominantly female energy, but there are men around. I sense a daughter who’s spiritual, who knows about chakras and is a devotee of a special guru. She touches her guru’s wooden lotus feet [a type of sandal] to connect to him. The daughter is not married, but she’s gearing up to it. She’s always studying. This woman has every chance of becoming internationally famous in the next 20 years.
‘In what must be the son’s bedroom, I sense discipline. This house is created with devotion and spiritual principles in mind. There’s no pollution in it at all. I’ve never experienced such incredible energy in a house in England. ‘There’s enlightenment here, too. As I walked towards this house, I started to feel extremely peaceful and I now realise that this feeling was coming from here. This house brings an incredible sense of peace to the area.
WHAT THEY GOT RIGHT
CHRIS
The people who live here present two very different faces to the world.
‘That’s true of me. Mum says I’m her daughter and her son! There’s a female, sensuous side to me, but I’m also work-driven and practical.’
The men in this household take a back seat and let the women run things.
‘Myself and my mum are the stronger personalities. My brother’s always out and Dad’s a humble, easy-going character.’
The exquisite shrine has a woman’s emotional pain attached to it.
‘It’s my mum’s shrine. She’s had it for years and we all pray in front of it. The pain could be attached to my sister who we lost in a car crash in the late 1980s and all miss terribly.
A woman is taking responsibility for what are traditionally a man’s duties.
‘Spot on. I can be a ruthless businesswoman and I’m the main breadwinner. My parents are retired and it’s my turn to care for them now.’
The individuals in this family do their own thing most of the time.
‘Definitely. When there are any problems everyone is always there, but otherwise we give each other space.’
They’d rather not go to bed, but stay up late in the kitchen, talking.
‘We’re always in the kitchen, chatting and eating! We go to bed as late as 2am. Our bedrooms are only for sleeping.”
Someone gets irritated by what’s behind the doors in the main bedroom.
‘That’s hilarious! My brother is always saying I have too much stuff in my room. I’ve got 40 pairs of shoes, 20 clutch bags, loads of wigs, make-up and jewellery behind those doors!
A man in the house is quiet and thinks a lot.
My brother doesn’t ever talk about his emotions and is much more of a thinker, always wondering what he wants in life.’
Someone who sleeps in the second double bedroom falls on the bed with exhaustion. ‘
‘That’s 100 per cent right. Mum works like crazy all day around the house. She doesn’t stop until her head hits the pillow.’
MARKO
This house is blessed.
‘Many people have said there’s lots of positive energy here. And when I moved in, I asked my guru to bless it for me.’
There’s a lot of prosperity in this home.
‘Since we’ve lived here, big projects, like my Bollywood Workout video, which Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow use, have done very well.’
Many ceremonies have been conducted here and the house is designed according to perfect vaastu.
‘When we moved in, we performed lots of ceremonies to bless the house. I’ve also read books on feng shui, which is similar to vaastu.
The owners are extremely spiritual, and also know a lot about astrology.
‘Mum has said prayers every Friday for 25 years, Dad meditates with me and we follow the Hindu religion. Astrology is Dad’s hobby.’
Medicine is in the family, which is split between the UK and India.
‘We have a surgeon and doctors in the family. And we are split between here and India.’
The daughter is constantly studying and is a devotee of a special guru.
‘Absolutely. I’m always taking courses and I’m a bookaholic! I met my guru five years ago, and immediately felt a connection with him. Everything he said about karma made sense.’
And while she isn’t married yet, she is gearing up to it.
‘How funny! Most Asian women my age are married, but I’m still single, because I’ve focused on my career. I’m currently putting off guys as the time still isn’t right.’
The son is very disciplined and prefers minimalism.
‘Correct. He’s studying Siddha yoga, which takes a lot of discipline. And he likes as few possessions as possible around him.’
This house has reached an incredible state of peace and enlightenment. ‘I started meditating five years ago and found it very powerful. My guru suggested I asked my friends to join me in a meditation when we moved into this house, and 40 people came. I now hold weekly meditation groups.’
VERDICT
‘Wow! Chris and Marko were spot on about me and my family. I hid everything to do with my dancing to see if they could pick up on this big part of my life. Chris sensed that I have different faces, which ties in with the performing arts, and Marko could tell I was successful and had international appeal. The calm, positive energy from regular meditating is so powerful, they sensed that more than anything else. But, then, I don’t dance at home, I meditate here. ‘It’s lovely to hear Marko has never been to a place with such pure energy and that our house brings peace to the area with its meditative atmosphere. I’m also very excited by the prediction that I’ll be internationally famous within 20 years. This ties in with what plenty of palm readers and astrologers have also told me. So watch this space!’
